What do you get when you mix a 17-year-old, her friends, a newspaper, and outrage over the fact that female genital mutilation (FGM) still exists? Some talking, some singing, a lot of social media, and a taste of sweet victory.
So what happened, exactly? Fahma Mohamed and her fellow campaigners made
a music video called “Buckle Up” about a super-disturbing topic: FGM.
But it’s not upsetting; it’s empowering. Go ahead and hit play.
They also launched a petition that asked UK Education Secretary Michael Gove to write to all schools and urge trainings to teachers so they can warn students and parents about the risks of FGM. Almost 250,000 signatures later…
Boom! Gove said yes. Might seem like a small step, but hey, talking about an issue is the first step to changing it.
